An accident is stressful enough without guessing how the insurance side works. This guide explains the usual steps of a collision claim so you know what to expect and what to ask.
This page is general information, not legal or insurance advice. Your policy and your insurance company decide what is covered. Always confirm details with your insurer.
Right after the accident
- Make sure everyone is safe. Call 911 if anyone is hurt. Move to a safe spot if the vehicles can be driven.
- Report it. Follow Tennessee law and police instructions on reporting the crash, and ask how to get a copy of any report.
- Exchange information. Names, phone numbers, insurance companies and policy numbers, plates and vehicle descriptions.
- Take photos. All vehicles involved, the damage up close, the scene and the road conditions.
- Notify your insurer. Report the accident promptly and write down your claim number.
Your claim, step by step
1. Open the claim
File with your insurer or the other driver’s insurer. You will be given a claim number and usually an adjuster.
2. Damage estimate
The damage is documented and a repair estimate is written. You can send us photos to get started.
3. Repair approval
The insurer reviews the estimate. You decide where the repair is done and schedule it.
4. Supplements
If hidden damage is found during teardown, a supplement is written and reviewed before that extra work is done.
5. Payment
Insurers commonly pay the shop, you, or both. Under your own coverage you pay your deductible.
6. Pick-up
Check the repair, ask questions, and keep your paperwork for your records.
What to have ready when you contact us
- Your claim number and insurance company, if you have filed a claim
- The adjuster’s name and phone number, if one has been assigned
- Photos of the damage and the vehicle’s VIN
- A short description of how the accident happened
Paying without insurance
Not every repair goes through insurance. If the damage is minor or below your deductible, you can choose to pay yourself. The estimate and repair work the same way — you simply approve the estimate directly. Choose “Paying myself” on the estimate request form.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to use the repair shop my insurer suggests?
Check your policy and ask your insurer directly what your options are for choosing a repair shop. If you would like us to repair your vehicle, tell your insurer and send us your claim number.
Which insurance pays: mine or the other driver's?
If the other driver is at fault, their liability coverage usually pays and you file with their insurer. If you are at fault, or fault is disputed, your own collision coverage may pay, minus your deductible. Your insurer can explain how your policy applies.
What is a deductible?
The deductible is the part of a covered repair you pay yourself under your own collision coverage. It is set by your policy. If the other driver's insurance accepts the claim, you usually do not pay a deductible.
What is a supplement?
A supplement is an addition to the original estimate for damage found after the vehicle is taken apart. It is normal in collision repair. If an insurer is paying, it reviews the supplement before the extra work is done.
Should I get repairs if I am not filing a claim?
Yes, if you prefer to pay yourself, for example when the damage costs less than your deductible. The repair process is the same; you approve the estimate directly.
